Netflix Acquires InterPositive to Advance AI-Driven Filmmaking
Netflix announced the acquisition of filmmaking technology startup InterPositive, a company founded in 2022 by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck, as part of its broader strategy to integrate generative AI technologies into film and television production.
The move reflects Netflix’s growing investment in artificial intelligence tools that enhance creative workflows. The company has previously used generative AI for special effects in some of its original productions and has assured investors that it is “very well positioned to effectively leverage ongoing advances in AI.”
InterPositive focuses on building AI tools designed to support production teams during post-production workflows. Its technology analyzes original production footage to help resolve technical challenges such as continuity issues, lighting adjustments, and environmental enhancements, improving editing efficiency while maintaining cinematic standards.
According to Ben Affleck, the idea behind InterPositive emerged in 2022 as he began considering the long-term impact of AI on filmmaking. He emphasized that the company’s mission is to preserve the human judgment that defines storytelling.
He explained:
“Intensive research and development led to our first model, trained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency, while preserving cinematic rules under real-world production challenges such as missing shots, background replacements or incorrect lighting.”
Affleck also stressed that the company is not focused on creating AI actors or synthetic performances, but rather on tools that assist filmmakers while preserving artistic control.
“We also built in restraints to protect creative intent, so the tools are designed for responsible exploration while keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists — and ensuring that the benefits of this technology flow directly back to the story they’re trying to tell.”
As part of the deal, Ben Affleck will join Netflix as a senior adviser, supporting the company’s efforts to develop AI tools that empower creators and enhance storytelling.
